Letter to my Daddy

# 1 Dad!!!

Dad’s Father’s Day card was at least two weeks late o_O!!  I didn’t get to go home nor did I get to send him a fancy Edible Arrangement, but I felt it absolutely necessary to let him in on a portion of how much I love him and how thankful I am to have him as my daddy.  So, in the space left in his Father’s Day card I decided to write the following…  No, I’m not going to spill ALL the beans, but hopefully he won’t mind me sharing a few words :).

I love you so much, and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have you as my father.  I know my card is a tad late, but I hope you receive it with the same level of love.  Over the past few weeks and month’s I’ve been reflecting over our relationship. I don’t think I’ve been able to truly tell you how much and how dearly I love you!!!  I am soooooo thankful daddy!!!

I want to say thanx for all you do.  Thank you for holding on after being laid off so close to retirement.  Thanks for not quitting and giving up on us when times got rough financially.  Thank you for being a dad who stuck around to take care of his family. I know the situation surrounding moms sudden illness has been stressful, but you have managed to keep us together.  I appreciate EVERY lesson and conversation we’ve ever had.

Thanks for showing me what a father and husband should be… Everything hasn’t been easy, but FLAWS AND ALL, I love you!!  Thanks for always supporting me as a follow my dreams.  I truly hope to make you proud one day.  I love you forever and always.

Happy Father’s Day!!!

PS – Dear Potential Suitors…. My daddy has set one hell of an example.  No, he isn’t perfect and you don’t have to be either.  I simply ask that you love God, love me, and love our family….the agape kind.  Actions speak louder than words, and I’m visually hands on…go figure.

Psalm 42

Psalm 42:1-2a (NIV)

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

This is exactly where I am right now…. not straying to the right or to the left, I thirst after God.  I just need to dwell in his presence!!!  For the past few days I have been in some kind of funk.  I’ve been questioning decisions, relationships… overwhelmed with some extreme emotion… needing to hear that still, small voice….  The easiest thing to do never seemed so hard.  I need Him soooooooo much right now!!!  He knows me better than anybody!  He knows my heart, my most inner workings… and He knew just what I needed to hear today during service.

Following the unction of the Holy Spirit, this mornings sermon was replaced with the first few verses of Psalm 42.  Not only do the words echo one of my FAVORITE songs, it spoke directly to my desert place.  Knowing that He said He’d never leave NOR forsake me, the human/emotional side of life can lead us to question irrevocable truths.  Since life only comes with one manual, I feel obligated to do exactly what it says…

Psalm 34:1-4 (KJV)…

I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Some days I feel like I’ve strayed away…, but then He’ll give me a small sign that I’m on the right track…just stay the course… Some days I just simply feel lost… but I pray, meditate and worship, and He provides direction (mostly through nudges or Chuck Norris drop-kicks, lol… I can be stubborn sometimes!!!).  But, at the end of the day… when the music stops and dust settles, its me and God. I often times have to proclaim a few things…. speak the word into my life…  remind myself of His promises and what His word says about me…

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Philippians 1:6 (NIV)… being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:28 (NIV)…And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Psalm 37:23 (KJV)…The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Galatians 6:9 (KJV)…And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Elliston Place Soda Shop

“You can sit anywhere you like!”

….chimed a voice from the rear of the restaurant.  I felt as if I’d traveled back in time to the era when jukeboxes held actual RECORDS (as theirs does….and only accepts quarters ;))!!!

There is a small sign taped near the coin insert that says “Quarters only, please!”.

This “mom and pop” shop completely made my morning.  This visit to the Elliston Soda Shop, inspired by a man who will probably never read this blog, was an absolute refresher to my South Carolinian roots.  It reminded me of breakfast at Gradma’s during the summer… the only things missing were my cousins and my cup of kool-aid (with only 2 ice-cubes because it was already cold #insider).

I ordered the fried bologna… yes, FRIED BOLOGNA (the THICK cut)… eggs, over hard (as always),  with grits and toast as my side items.  I held back a squeal of excitement when my meal was delivered.  The bologna had the burnt edges I grew to love and request as a child… I felt like a little school girl!!!!

Founded in 1939, the Elliston Soda Shop can brag that they’re the oldest operating restaurant in Nashville.  Once  pharmacy and grocery store, the original tile that reads “Elliston Pharmacy” still graces the entrance way.  If you’re looking for a place off of the beaten path, yet near the heard of downtown, this is a great place to start!  They serve lunch and dinner… no reservation required.  Everything is cooked to order….  mostly fresh, never frozen… AND they have a frequent buyer card!!!

My exit was just as pleasant as my entry… “Come back and see us!!” [Me:  I most definitely will]

The smell of fresh coffee, sausage and eggs greet you at the door… murmurs of intimate conversations fill the air…

Mexican chorizo sausage, salsa verde & manchego cheese

I wanted to try something new and different, and that’s exactly what I got.  Led here by a 50% off option on Scout Mob (yes, I live on a BUDGET!), I felt there was no time like the present to “taste and see”.  If you are looking for your traditional bacon, eggs, and grits, this is not the place for you!!  Omelets that cover half of your plate and a bread selection to please any palette calls 1720 West End Avenue “Home” :).  Great customer service, pleasurable window views, and a cozy earthy/modern ambiance is a great way to start your day.  They serve breakfast, lunch, and brunch daily.  I developed an immediate appreciation for the “Brunch Libations” ;).  Bon appetite!

Things Moms Say….

Yes, Mother’s day is Sunday May 13th (in case you didn’t know or FORGOT)!!!!  Your mom has been too good to you to receive a card that has been beat up from all the people who went through them YESTERDAY (lol)!!!  Maybe you should remind her of a few things that she has DEFINITELY said during her tenure… As a woman I’ll probably say a few of these same things to my chaps…  And we say that we’ll never “say these things to our kids” or “treat our kids this way” …. #LiesandDeceit :-)!!!

Here is a list of the most common and popular “mom-isms”. These motherly advise transcends the borders of time, space, language and culture. For kids are kids everywhere and Mom are always Mom…caring, concern, all-knowing and full of love.

  • Money does not grow on trees.
  • I brought you into this world, and I’ll for sure take you out!*
  • Don’t make that face or it’ll freeze in that position.
  • If I talked to my mother like you talk to me….
  • Always change your underwear; you never know when you’ll have an accident.
  • I’m the mother, you’re the child.*
  • Be careful or you’ll put your eye out.
  • Don’t make me grab my belt!*
  • What if everyone jumped off a cliff? Would you do it, too?
  • You’re a leader, not a follower.*
  • You have enough dirt behind those ears to grow potatoes!
  • If I have to tell you ONE MORE TIME!*
  • Close that door! Were you born in a barn?
  • If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
  • Let the door knob hit you where the good Lord split you!*
  • Don’t put that in your mouth; you don’t know where it’s been!
  • I pay the cost to be the boss!!*
  • Be careful what you wish for, it might come true.
  • This hurts me more than it hurts you.*
  • Don’t eat those, they will stunt your growth.
  • Don’t make me call your daddy!*
  • I mean what I say, and say what I mean!*
  • What’s meant to be, is meant to be. (Mom only used this when something bad happened or when you experienced a disappointment.)
  • It doesn’t matter what you accomplish, I’ll always be proud of you.
  • I hope that when you grow up, you have kids “Just Like you”! (Also known as the “Mother’s Curse”)
  • I’ll be all over you like white on rice!!*
  • Because I’m your mother that’s why!!
  • You’ll never get to old to lean across this knee!*
  • What did R. Kelly say… “If the shoe fits”!*
  • Most importantly, I LOVE YOU!!!*

Celebrate with a mother this weekend. They have the hardest job on earth, raising us!

Wake up on the Sunny Side!!

Great food, GREATER service!!!

From the moment you walk in until the time you leave you will be surrounded by great food and great people!!!  My uncle invited my aunt and I to lunch while my mom was in the hospital (detailed post will come), and this was his suggestion.  I am still grateful for the broccoli casserole, and the mac and cheese was FABULOUS!!  Each day offers a tongue teasing dish that is sure to knock your socks off!!!  We happened to visit on “Meatloaf Monday”…

Meatloaf Monday!!!

Meatloaf (yes, with rice…YUMMY!!!), broccoli casserole (veggie), mac & cheese (veggie), and collard greens…. #delightful

The meatloaf was made the way my grandmother used to do it, the mac & cheese the way it should be, and the sweet tea was TRUE to Carolina!  Add the ketchup if you dare!!!  Yes, this was definitely a portion large enough to be “Linner” (lunch and dinner).

My friends and I are slightly round with REASON!  We enjoy food, fun, and fellowship.  We take steps to remain healthy, but anytime we have the opportunity to try something tasty and new, we’re all for it!!  So, if you enjoy great food and happen to visit Columbia, SC this is a place to put on your list!!  Check please!!!
